Amazon Choose HD-DVD for CustomFlix

Amazon introduces new service called CustomFlix. It is a new service allowed customer to order a customized burned Film. Consumers will purchase a Film from CustomFlix to start the automated process, and then the film will be burned onto disc(s) wilt other optional packaging. Then the burned disk will be shipped to customer.

The latest information got is that Amazon choose HD-DVD format to serve their high-def DVD order. This will heat-up the battle of Sony’s Blu-Ray and Toshiba-Microsoft’s HD-DVD. Amazon has a deal with Microsoft to launch 1000 indie film project burned onto HD-DVD.

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are a new media format that designed to be successor of DVD. The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc, because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format. A single layer Blu-ray Disc can store 25 GB (50GB for 2 layers), over 5 times the size of a single layer DVD; while HD-DVD, which has slight different design format than conventional DVD, has a single-layer capacity of 15 GB (30GB for 2 layers).

Some people said that the HD-DVD authoring cost is cheaper than Blu-Ray so that Amazon finally chose HD-DVD for their Video-on-Demand service.
