WiMAX in general is a new technology that will provide high-speed wireless data service, with various type from point to point links to full mobile cellular type access. This for example will allow mobile data user (laptop) to access Broadband Internet without necessarily connected to fixed jack. This will be an alternative beside DSL and and cable.

Since it birth on June 2001, the organization who manage it, the WiMAX Forum, has establish several standards to follow conformance and interoperability of the IEEE 802.16 standard.

However, the development of WiMAX in several countries has a great challenge and obstacle since it is considered as a “killer” for 3G. Several countries that had built 3G lately worries that presence of WiMAX in them will decrease and make the 3G infrastructure they have built before will useless, because subscriber/user will prefer to use Wimax. This has countered by WiMAX developer; since it will only serve data services while 3G can be operated to provide both Data and Voice services.
